How to Write Fiction Effectively

Time always plays a big role in the world of fiction. It is all about revisions and perfection. It is a timely work of art. It is one form of creative writing that is crisp, vigorous, concise, and doesn't contain run on sentences.

While fiction depends on the author’s style and mood, most of them have brief sentences. This is because they are not written in one day or in one week.  So there are more time for revisions. While novels take years to finish it, short stories probably take months or a year depending on length.

Other than these, writing fiction has principles and rules that you need to adapt. Here are some advices I can give you on how to adapt these rules and principles so you can write fiction effectively.

Show, Do not Tell

In writing fiction you just need to be very broad and vivid with your words and create scenes as much as you can. The “Show do not tell” dogma should always be applied whether this be for American or Philippine Literature, or just about any culture of Literature. This is to let your readers experience what actually took place in a story and not just narrating it.

Decide the Point of View That is Perfect with your Idea.

Your point of view actually depends on your character and mood of your story. If you want a gloomy story you can write it in first person. For a happy one you might want to choose the omniscient third person. Or perhaps you can decide on a monologue when you are writing a short short story and you want it to tell as if you are just talking to yourself.

Love Your Character

A character that is very real makes the story more interesting.  So when creating a character you have to spend a lot of time with it. Create a character that includes his favorite food, the watch that his grandmother gave him. You need to love this character. Make this character or a protagonist that readers will care about and feel sympathy about.

Widen Your Imagination

When creating a story you need to have a very wide imagination. You need to have a very big picture inside your mind while writing it. Feel the scenes and make it more realistic by including the color of furniture or the shadow of the dog that passes by.

Make an Arrow Pointing to the Gist of the Story.

When you begin your story you have to makes sure that you’ve already made an arrow pointing to each paragraph or chapter until the end. An arrow is a reminder that you’re not out of the significance of your story.  The more precise and meaningful your subject or moral lesson is, the better your story will be.

Make a Unique Ending

If you are a heavy reader of fiction you know that most of them have happy endings. Even this is the accepted and appropriate style when closing the book or ending a movie, a unique ending is still a very good idea. You can play along with your plot. Experiment what is best from the beginning, the middle, the climax, and the ending. And the ending should let your readers contemplate in one corner after reading it.

These tips here are only partial that I have to teach about the true essence of writing fiction. Follow these tips in the meantime while I make the next post on how to write fiction more effectively.
